Specialist, Safety, Health and Environment

Location: Dublin, Ireland Job reference: R-251095 Date posted: 04/28/2026

This is what you will do:

Specialist, Safety, Health & Environment will provide environmental, health, and safety support for all operations at the Alexion Dublin Manufacturing Facility.

You will be responsible for:

  • SHE Program Leadership and Compliance: Develop, implement, and monitor comprehensive Safety, Health & Environment (SHE) programs that meet or exceed applicable regulations and AstraZeneca standards—translating policy into site procedures, SOPs, and metrics. Example: lead annual program reviews and site audits, remediate gaps, and report performance to site leadership and Global SHE.
  • Operational Risk Control and Safe Manufacturing: Partner daily with manufacturing operations, engineering, and the SHE Team to embed safe work practices and ensure proper use of containment equipment and facilities in GMP environments. Example: conduct pre-startup safety reviews for new production lines and oversee permit-to-work and lockout/tagout practices on critical utilities.
  • Incident Management and Corrective Action: Lead incident response, injury management, investigations, and regulatory recordkeeping; drive root cause analysis and implement corrective and preventive actions (CAPAs) to prevent recurrence. Example: facilitate 5-Why/fishbone investigations with area supervisors and track CAPA closure in the site action log.
  • Hazard Assessment and Life Safety Governance: Perform routine and project-based SHE hazard assessments (e.g., HAZOPs, job hazard analyses) and make recommendations to control chemical, biological, ergonomic, and process safety risks. Co-own life safety, fire protection, and property risk programs with Facilities/Engineering, including impairment permits and third-party inspections.
  • Training and Competency Management: Develop, deliver, and maintain SHE training curricula tailored to roles (operators, maintenance, lab staff, contractors), including onboarding, annual refreshers, and targeted modules (e.g., spill response, confined space, respiratory protection). Measure training effectiveness and maintain auditable records aligned to GMP and corporate requirements.
  • Emergency Preparedness and Response: Maintain readiness to respond to site emergencies during off-hours (evenings, weekends, holidays); coordinate drills, ICS roles, and collaboration with local emergency services. Example: plan and execute semi-annual hazardous material spill and fire evacuation drills with Security and Facilities.
  • Regulatory Surveillance and Stakeholder Engagement: Stay current with evolving SHE regulations and industry best practices; translate changes into actionable site updates. Build cross-functional relationships with Production, Quality, Facilities, and EHS Centers of Excellence to secure sponsorship for SHE initiatives and drive a culture of “Everyone Home Safe.”
  • Management System Ownership and Continuous Improvement: Develop and maintain the site Environmental and Health & Safety Management System (e.g., ISO 14001/45001-aligned), including document control, objectives and targets, KPIs, and management review. Highlight challenges such as balancing production schedules with risk mitigations and navigating complex containment requirements in high-hazard operations.

You will need to have:

  • Minimum 3 years of professional experience in Safety, Health & Environment programs, with preferred 3+ years in a cGMP-regulated environment.
  • Strong knowledge of Safety, Health & Environment permitting requirements and regulations, and demonstrated ability to manage associated compliance reporting (e.g., permit applications, renewals, and periodic regulatory submissions).
  • Specific experience in hazardous waste management or other professional SHE trainings or certifications a plus.
  • Ability to make effective oral presentations and work as part of a team.
  • Proficiency in organizing, communication, problem solving, multitasking, and collaborating with others.
  • Ability to develop and roll out SHE programs as required by the operational needs of the business
  • The individual in this position will be able to organize his/her own work on a routine basis and requires minimal supervision. The individual must be able to provide updates and tracking on tasks.
  • Good communication skills required, both verbal and written.
  • The duties of this role are generally conducted in a pharmaceutical manufacturing environment.  As is typical of a pharmaceutical manufacturing-based role, employees must be able, with or without an accommodation to: frequently lift/carry 15/30 pounds unassisted/assisted; stand for prolonged periods of time; walk and move for prolonged periods of time; climb stairs or ladders; gown/degown PPE and uniforms; use a computer with a keyboard and mouse; collaborate with others; maintain general availability during standard business hours.

We would prefer for you to have:

  • BS in an SHE-related discipline, such as engineering, physical science, or biological science/chemistry, or equivalent experience required
  • Qualification or experience in safety and environmental required.
