Statistical Programming Systems Intern - Summer 2026

Role Summary:
The objective of this summer internship is to develop a prototype R Shiny application that guides statistical programmers in selecting and implementing appropriate data visualizations and analytics in R based on specific use cases. A key deliverable will be the identification of suitable visualization methods, and the provision of runnable, well-documented R code tailored to programming needs. The intern will collaborate closely with colleagues in Statistical Programming and Biostatistics. In addition to the visualization work, the intern will support piloting a new data platform for deploying the Shiny application. This will include learning how to set up a new environment, using Git for version control, and deploying the R Shiny application within the platform. The work will advance Alexion’s R workflows by providing a guided visualization tool and demonstrating deployment in a new data environment.
Accountabilities/Responsibilities:
- Develop visualizations and deploy R Shiny application that provides recommendations and reproducible code for statistical programmers working in R. Create data processes, workflows, and scripts for R Shiny application.
- Collaborate with Statistical Programming and Biostatistics teams to create documentation and best practice guidelines.
- Deploy Shiny application in a new platform, applying established version control and deployment practices. Gain understanding of the databases development process and the data flow dependencies required for development of a submission packages.
- Gain understanding of regulatory validation practices, including environment and package validation, audit trails, and related documentation. Document and present methodologies utilized and provide a user manual for any application.
Any other activities as required.
The duties of this role are generally conducted in an office environment. Qualifications:
- A successful candidate would typically have a BS / MS in Computer Science, Information Systems, Information Technology, Bioinformatics, Biostatistics, Statistics, Data Science or similar degree and is currently enrolled in a MS or PhD program. Upperclassman who have not yet received their BS/BA and are enrolled in a program listed above may also be considered.
- Experience working with R and developing R Shiny applications.
- Experience with data visualization and understanding of associated tradeoffs.
- Understanding/coursework in the fundamentals of computer science, information technology, and data analytics.
- Ability/desire to learn new techniques and best practices.
- Good interpersonal, collaborative and communication skills.
- Candidates must have an expected graduation date after August 2026.
- Available to work full-time for duration of the internship

What to Expect:
This role is a 4-month paid contract position, which starts in June 2026. Our position will be based in our Mississauga head office and allow for flexible working arrangements working both onsite (2-3 times per week) and virtually.
Annual base salary for this position ranges from $41,495.20 to $54,462.45. AstraZeneca is committed to providing fair and equitable compensation opportunities to all colleagues. Our compensation policies and practices have been designed to allow colleagues to progress through the salary range over time as they progress in their role. The range provided in this posting represents an offer pay range used in a majority of situations. The base pay offered will vary depending on multiple individualized factors, including the candidate's skills and experience, job-related knowledge, and other specific business and organizational needs. In some cases, offers outside the range may also be considered to address unique circumstances.
In addition, our permanent positions offer an annual Variable Pay Bonus/Short Term Incentive opportunity as well as eligibility to participate in our equity-based long-term incentive program (if applicable to role). Benefits offered for permanent roles include a competitive Flex Benefits & Retirement Savings Program, 4 weeks’ paid vacation, and annual Personal Days. Fixed Term Contract/Temporary positions (excluding students) are offered a Contract Benefits Program.
