This is what you will do:

  • The development intern is responsible for performing assigned experimental tasks to support charge variant and purity determination incorporating various capillary electrophoretic methods including iCE, MauriCE and Lab Chip and/or other analytical methodologies for Alexion’s therapeutic protein candidates. The intern will work in collaboration with other scientific staff in R&D and Analytical Development and Quality Control.

  • The development intern is responsible for performing assigned experimental and developmental tasks to support automation of existing analytical assays using laboratory liquid handlers like the Hamilton PREP, Integra Assist Plus, Waters Andrew+, and Perkin Elmer Janus instruments.

You will be responsible for:

  • Executes experimental studies to assess heterogeneity and purity of therapeutic protein (~60%)

  • Automate experimental studies to assess heterogeneity and purity of therapeutic protein (~10%

  • Document study results in notebooks, forms, and technical reports (~10%)

  • Communicate and present scientific findings in process development and global product development groups (~10%)

You will need to have:

A successful candidate will typically have:

  • 0-2 years of experience working in a relevant laboratory setting

  • Understanding/courseworkin the fundamentals of biology and/or chemistry

  • Lab-based role, conducted in an lab environment

  • Ability/desire to learn new techniques

  • Good interpersonal, collaborative and communication skills

  • Experience with various MS Office programs, including Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint 

We would prefer for you to have:

  • A successful candidate will typically complete most of core courses towards a BA or BS degree in Biology, Biochemistry, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering or related discipline from an accredited university.

  • Problem solving skills: Solves routine technical problems and has an understanding of statistical analysis

  • Scientific Inquisitiveness: Understands background of assigned technical tasks

  • Communication skills: Discusses work with supervisor and coworkers; Can draft technical documents with templates 

  • Technical expertise: Conducts assigned routine tasks in the laboratory with supervision 

  • Strategic ability: Understands priority of assigned tasks under direct supervision 

  • Ownership: Works with supervisor to ensure assigned tasks are completed

Physical and Mental Requirements

The duties of this role are generally conducted in an lab environment.  As is typical of a lab-based role, employees must be able, with or without an accommodation to: lift/carry 15/30 pounds unassisted/assisted; work comfortably in a controlled environment with and around biological, infectious, and hazardous materials; gown/degown PPE; use a computer; engage in communications via phone, video, and electronic messaging; engage in problem solving and non-linear thought, analysis, and dialogue; collaborate with others; maintain general availability during standard business hours.
